"Not made entirely of rubber, but the joints are made of rubber. And the skin is made of rubber. The chair is made of a regularly solid material (wood or metal of some sort), while the joints and the skin of the chair are made of rubber. You may bend and turn any way you wish, without breaking or busting.
The design is said to have been inspired by an old grandpa's chair that had become loose and creaky.
This chair is for people who move around a bunch. It's called 'A Restless Chairacter.''

"Annie the shopping trolley" chair by Max McMurdo for Reestore

Taking carts that were landfill bound due to missing wheels or bent legs, designer Max McMurdo works his magic and "poof!" they are pieces you'd love to own. Reestore attempts to "avoid traditional eco materials in favor of contemporary finishes, fabrics, and, above all, style."

"Most chairs are upholstered in foam, which can be treated with fire retardants and difficult to recycle. Ben Mickus designed the Relief Chair as part of a collection that uses "digital fabrication and solid, rapidly renewable materials. Upholstery, foam products and finishes are all supplanted with thick sheets of natural wool felt, adhered with non-toxic, water-based adhesives. The precision-cut contours of each piece of felt are aggregated into sinuous yet comfortable forms."

The designer continues:

"I wanted to design furniture that arouses immediate recognition in both design and use. 'Reversed perfection', with an immediate freedom in manufacture and details. The chair consists of patches as in a patchwork quilt, which gives them a somewhat home-made character, without allowing this to compromise their quality."

"nendo designed the cabbage chair for XXIst Century Man exhibition curated by Issey Miyake to commemorate the first anniversary of 21_21 Design Sight in Roppongi, Tokyo.
Miyake asked us to make furniture out of the pleated paper that is produced in mass amounts during the process of making pleated fabric, and usually abandoned as an unwanted by-product. Our solution to his challenge transformed a roll of pleated paper into a small chair that appears naturally as you peel away its outside layers, one layer at a time.
Resins added during the original paper production process adds strength and the ability to remember forms, and the pleats themselves give the chair elasticity and a springy resilience, for an overall effect that looks almost rough, but gives the user a soft, comfortable seating experience.

The chair has no internal structure. It is not finished, and it is assembled without nails or screws. This primitive design responds gently to fabrication and distribution costs and environmental concerns, the kinds of issues that face our 21st century selves." added on 2009-02-26
