"Studio Jo Meesters launched "Odds and Ends, Bits and Pieces" at last month's Dutch Design Week, a collection of four pieces made entirely from 34 discarded wooden beams and 16 leftover blankets. The ongoing experimental project TESTLAB aims to reuse discarded materials by combing craftsmanship with mass production techniques to create new types of furniture.

The basic principle in Jo Meester's work is sustainability. By integrating various aspects of craftsmanship, sophistication, and detailing, Meesters aims to imbue his projects and products with an emotional value. "Designer Trevor O'Neil took advantage of a building being gutted next door to salvage a bunch of materials into a pretty interesting collection of furniture. Not least of these is this funky, ultra-modern couch made from salvaged cork; we love that it's a sustainable material, and we love that it's already have a previous life as something else. O'Neil is no one trick pony; in addition to his furniture, he makes jewelry out of salvaged wood scraps, along with sculptures and paintings.

"Australian industrial designer Stuart Mcfarlane has designed a chair made by folding recycled plastic.

The chair is made without using glues or screws and can hold up to 100 kg.

"What once was lost is now found in Lost & Found's Upcycled Furniture, a collection of stools and tables. Designed by UK-based design studio, &made, each piece features a brightly-colored base rescued from becoming trash coupled with a rough and irregular tree stump for a top. The rather unusual and unexpected combination represents &made’s goal desire to spark dialogue about our contemporary throw-away culture.

By using salvaged furniture for the base of each stool and table, each piece is a solid example of reducing waste by re-using what has already been made. The collection stands out in their aesthetic, providing a fresh sense of eclecticism without missing a beat on function. And with the use of salvaged bases, the pieces stay true to their name- that 'lost' furniture can be 'found' again in an environmentally conscious design.

&made is the vision of designers Dave Cameron and Toby Hadden, who say their studio is focused on "ethically conscious contemporary design." The firm started in 2005 and is located in a former mid-20th century doss house overlooking the Thames River. The duo work in product, furniture and spatial design and have been featured at the MoMA in an exhibit called Design and the Elastic Mind." added on 2008-10-10

"oormerk is a design studio based in the southern town of breda in the netherlands consisting of ruud van hemert and stijn van oorschot. the studio has a number of furniture and architectural pieces
in their portfolio including the ‘replex’ table.
this long dining table was created from a collection of old
furniture pieces. the pieces were disassembled and glued together. this block of wood was then cut into sections and assembled into a table. this process leaves the imperfections of the materials intact
creating a very unusual surface. "

"Another Chair, a new project that adapts unwanted chairs into new combinations.

The following is from Karen Ryan:
I cannot help myself I just wanted to make another chair. A chair that was beautifully hand crafted and designed entirely by me.
A chair that showcased my love of structures made out of raw wood. But my conscience won over me as I stared at a further three discarded chairs that were now stacked in my studio.
At that moment my brief to myself was set, I would make my chair but it would be supported by the cultural histories of other chairs, transparent of its found state and bearing clear testament to its new construction." added on 2008-10-08

"Designed by Gianluca Solid, the term Ovetto stands for Recycling Egg. Sporting a simple yet elegant form, this dust bin has two compartments for taking care of the garbage in green style. This white oval shaped bin is chic enough to flaunt it in open and not hide it away in some corner or behind the doors. A vital yet hidden green element of this bin is that it is made out of recycled polypropylene.

Since recycling waste is the most significant act in a bid to reduce the burden of landfills, such a green bin steps in to take care that the waste is correctly disposed of and recycled too. It has small openings on the top that can take in what ever you chuck. When it is time to empty this egg, simply pull out the larger sections and dump all the collected waste in the garbage vans. Also, the sections have holes that facilitate air circulation. It is also spacious with a 15 to 17 Liter capacity. " added on 2008-10-07

"For his senior thesis at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Jaime Salm teamed with two classmates to design a line of student furnishings that were 100% environmentally friendly, from birth to death. Follow Function had the opportunity to visit Jaime in his Philadelphia office where he displayed a bowl from his thesis. It was simple, but unusual (how many ways can a bowl really be designed?), and quite good-looking. Made from recycled cardboard, the inside was smooth while the outside was heavily textured, as though I was holding a monochromatic jeweled rock (the capsule-like form would be echoed a few years later when Jaime designed the Capsule Light, for sale on FF). After graduation, his two classmates left for different parts of the globe, but Jaime believed that the values behind their senior thesis were viable in the real world. He soon took a freelancing job for Anthropologie, designing signage for the retail chain using the same recycled cardboard techniques."

"Composed entirely from damaged PET bottles and an eclectic assortment of found bottle caps, CAPtivate is an innovative lamp designed by London based studio and gallery Lula Dot. A gorgeous re-use of recycled materials, the design took center stage at 100% Design as part of [re]design's 'Lighten Up' exhibition (the follow up to 2007's Sit Up exhibition).

Founded earlier this year by Lucy Norman, Lula Dot explains that "only 5.5% of plastic bottles sold in the UK are recycled, which leaves 40 thousand tons left that go into landfills every year." CAPtivate makes use of the unused bottle caps and has a unique ability to be continually re-created by changing the caps.

CAPtivate is made from damaged plastic PET bottles supplied by Artenius Packaging, and features an assortment of bottle caps collected from the West Ham football stadium! The lights are currently available for £115 (including postage and packaging), and each light comes with approximately 40 bottle tops, although to cover the light completely you will have to collect your own caps!" added on 2008-09-30
