A Designer's Visions, Remade: Is It Carpet, or Is It Real?
Edward Fields, who was known as the bespoke carpet designer to stars like Princess Grace of Monaco and Mary Tyler Moore from the 1950s to the 1970s, considered his rugs art for the floor. Although the late designer’s company was purchased by Tai Ping carpets two years ago, it remains true to his vision. To coincide with the opening of a new showroom in Manhattan, the company is reissuing 60 original rugs; the Deep ($8,960), left, an 8-by-10-foot, hand-dyed wool carpet with varying pile heights, was designed in the 1980s. Prices for the made-to-order, hand-knotted rugs start at about $85 per square foot; to the trade from Edward Fields, 150 East 58th Street (Lexington Avenue), (212) 310-0400. STEPHEN TREFFINGER
