This Brussels textile designer’s work has already created major buzz online. Her pride and joy is this tactile, 3-dimensional island oasis – one that you can take apart - available exclusively at 66degrees.com.

Laure Kasiers is a master textile designer who brings a background in graphic design to the forefront. Using unconventional materials (including production scrap), she explores themes including mobility and contrast, in this case wrapped in the comfort and warmth of a soft rug – an avant-garde masterpiece.

Archipel is contsructed by a unique method of trimming fringes. Each piece of fabric is wrapped in around each other, creating gyres, or a vortex-like effect. Coloured straps are inserted to help emphasize the lapping of the waves against the islands, and give the water an iridescent look. The small, soft islands also serve as a seating area, and some are removable, doubling as additional floor seating. added on 2008-07-10

A Designer's Visions, Remade: Is It Carpet, or Is It Real?
Edward Fields, who was known as the bespoke carpet designer to stars like Princess Grace of Monaco and Mary Tyler Moore from the 1950s to the 1970s, considered his rugs art for the floor. Although the late designer’s company was purchased by Tai Ping carpets two years ago, it remains true to his vision. To coincide with the opening of a new showroom in Manhattan, the company is reissuing 60 original rugs; the Deep ($8,960), left, an 8-by-10-foot, hand-dyed wool carpet with varying pile heights, was designed in the 1980s. Prices for the made-to-order, hand-knotted rugs start at about $85 per square foot; to the trade from Edward Fields, 150 East 58th Street (Lexington Avenue), (212) 310-0400.
