"after the second world war a rivalry began between the world's two superpowers: the soviet union and the united states of america began. a few years later the cold war ensued. during this time new technologies were continually being developed to produce weapons and launch space programs.
art, design and architecture were also strongly influenced during this period, as each wanted to show their idea of modernity.

During and after the Second World War, the scarcity of materials resulted in the development of a range of new production techniques. Attempts at manufacturing furniture in bent plywood had been made before the war, but in the late forties the techniques had improved substantially, and the first pieces were put into mass-production.

In 1948 Hans J. Wegner presented a chair with a teak plywood seat and back mounted on a beech frame. And the following year, Børge Mogensen used the same teak plywood/beech combination in his version of the “Shell Chair”. added on 2008-02-06

During the 1950s and 1960s Swedish designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson headed his own lighting production company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, and also produced lights for other companies including AB Ellysett of Sweden, for whom he designed a range of natural split pine lighting fixtures of which this particular pendant light is believed to be one example.

The light has a maximum diameter of 30cm (11.75 inches) and a height of 21cm (8.25 inches). Its eight-pronged star shape is made from two intersecting rectangles with slightly elliptical lines. Close inspection reveals that in two places the very fine pine slats have split but the wood is still in situ, while in a third place a splinter has been lost (see final two images below for the splinter and the longer of the two splits respectively). These flaws are, however, difficult to spot in normal viewing of the light and its overall appearance is very good, the wood having the rich patina always seen in vintage Jakobsson split pine lights from the 1950s and 1960s. added on 2007-09-27
